10 Tips for a Great Goal Setting Process

So you want to make some improvements in your life but are feeling a little overwhelmed about how to get started? Setting and reaching goals can quickly become an overwhelming feat, but there are steps you can take to make the journey more manageable. Here are 10 ways to organize your goal setting process and increase your chances of success:

1) Be specific

Establish goals that are specific and measurable so you know when you’ve reached them. An example of a goal that’s difficult to measure might be: start taking care of myself. You can make this goal easier to measure by stating instead: implement a weekly schedule which includes exercise, meditation, and social activity at least 4x/week.

Here are some examples of goals that are specific and measurable:

  • Become a certified scuba diver
  • Train to bench press 320 lbs
  • Master the guitar chords to “Bad Bad Leroy Brown”

2) Tap into your motivation

Why do you want to achieve these goals? Motivation won’t do all the work for you, but without knowing what long-term gains you hope to earn, you might be more likely to lose momentum when the going gets tough.

3) Stay flexible

Most people struggle to implement ideas they didn’t have at the start of the goal setting process. Once an idea becomes an action, things can change. Be open to new information you receive and be willing to change your perspective accordingly.

4) Plan ahead for negotiation

Knowing what your deal-breakers are before you get emotionally invested will help save you from difficult decisions later. Sure, your goals may not involve making a deal with someone else, but we negotiate with conditions and expectations all the time; it’s always wise to know early what you’re willing to give up if you must.

8) Enjoy the journey

9) Be kind to yourself

When you reach some sort of endpoint, whether or not you’ve successfully achieved your goal, give yourself a high-five.
